Six names appear in one comparison table. One accepts a Revit view inside a design application. Another starts from a browser upload. A third is a general image generator. A fourth behaves more like a presentation layer attached to a real-time renderer. Calling all four “AI rendering software” is technically convenient and operationally useless.

The 16 September intel sweep surfaced several new and updated comparison guides, including Chaos's six-option guide, Gendo's top-ten list and broader visualization software guides. Their categories, claims and commercial positions differ. Instead of producing another winner, a practice should document the role each candidate could perform in its own process.

Start with the assignment

Write one sentence before looking at products: “We need to turn an approved SketchUp exterior view into three client-review atmosphere options while preserving massing, openings and camera.” That sentence fixes the source, stage, quantity, audience and geometry obligation. It also excludes tools whose strongest work begins with free text or whose output cannot reliably hold the model.

A different assignment, such as “We need twenty loose facade directions before the model exists,” creates a different shortlist. So does “We need a coordinated final image set after materials are approved.” There is no contradiction when one product is suitable for the first job and poor for the third.

The useful question is not “Which renderer is best?” It is “Which production role can this renderer own without creating a hidden second job?”

The five lines on a role card

Keep the card short enough to read during a buying meeting. Every claim should point to a vendor page, support page, trial observation or recorded test. Marketing copy belongs in the evidence column, not in the conclusion.

LineWhat to recordFailure to expose
AssignmentConcept, option study, client review, final still or motionA concept tool being sold as final production
SourceText, sketch, flat image, viewport, native model or render passesModel preparation and export work disappearing
ControlGeometry influence, masks, reference images, seeds and regional editsAttractive output that changes the project
ReturnResolution, layers, metadata, gallery, editable assets and archiveA dead-end JPEG becoming the handoff
OperatorRole, active minutes, review duty and required skillSenior design time being priced at zero

The assignment line prevents a broad category label from controlling the purchase. The source line exposes whether “integration” means a native connection, a plugin, a synchronized camera or simply accepting an exported image. The control line converts vague fidelity language into checkable mechanisms. The return line asks what the team gets back. The operator line identifies who must make it work.

Separate source access from design authority

A product can read a model and still alter visible geometry in its generated image. Conversely, a browser tool that only receives a PNG may preserve a silhouette well enough for an early mood study. Input format is evidence about workflow friction, not proof of fidelity.

Chaos describes Veras as using the 3D model geometry as a substrate and lists connections for common design applications on its current product material. That is a meaningful source-access claim. It does not remove the need to test openings, roof edges, floor lines, railings and repeated bays on the practice's own files. The role card should distinguish the vendor-stated connection from the office-observed result.

For every protected element, define a rejection rule. “Preserve geometry” is too broad. “No moved window edges at the approved camera, no added floors, and no changed parapet profile” can be checked. A candidate passes the role only if its outputs meet those rules at an acceptable rate.

Make the return trip visible

Many comparisons end when an image looks good. Architectural work continues. The design changes, a second view is requested, a client marks an area, the image enters a board, and someone must find the source three months later.

Record whether a result returns as a flattened image, an editable scene, a set of passes, a shared review link or a reusable configuration. Then test one small revision. Move a window, change one finish, regenerate the same camera and measure the repair. The revision tells more about the production role than the first output does.

This is also where real-time and generative products stop looking interchangeable. Maxon's current visualization guidance distinguishes real-time presentation tools from products associated with high-end rendering and deeper production control. Generative systems can be excellent at option speed and local transformation. A practice may need both, connected by an explicit handoff, rather than one product declared the universal winner.

Add evidence grades

Give every statement one of four labels: vendor claim, documented capability, observed trial result or accepted project result. A vendor-authored comparison can identify features and pricing that deserve verification, but it should not be treated as an independent ranking. The same rule applies to an affiliate list, a studio review and a community comment.

Dates matter. Record the application version, plugin version, named model or engine, plan, credit rules and access date. The current sweep itself contains pages referring to different Veras releases. A role card without a version becomes unreliable as soon as the interface or engine changes.

Do not promote a trial result to a project result. A short trial can confirm that an input opens, a control exists and an export completes. It cannot establish team throughput, client acceptance or stable performance over a deadline week. Those claims need a paid pilot with a representative file.

Run a two-hour role audition

Choose one past project whose geometry, approvals and final image are known. Prepare one source package and a written assignment. Give each candidate the same clock, acceptance rules and output requirement. Log setup, active operation, generation waits, rejected outputs, correction work and export.

Do not force identical prompts when products expose different controls. The goal is not a synthetic model benchmark. It is a fair audition for the defined office role. Allow the documented workflow for each product, then count every intervention. Save the complete contact sheet, not only the best frame.

At the end, classify each candidate as eligible, conditional or out. Eligible means the tool met the assignment and return requirements. Conditional means it can serve with a named repair or handoff. Out means it failed a protected requirement, exceeded the labor allowance or could not produce the required artifact.

One tool can carry several cards

A product may deserve separate cards for concept studies, client-review stills and short motion. Its evidence may support one role strongly and another weakly. Keep those results separate. An impressive video feature does not prove drawing fidelity, and a reliable viewport transformation does not prove final-film continuity.

The cards also make a mixed stack legible. A BIM-connected generator may own early options. A real-time renderer may own navigable review. A conventional renderer and compositor may own approved finals. The procurement decision becomes a routing decision with costs and responsibilities attached.

Our take: buy a job description

The current flood of comparison content is useful discovery material. It is poor authority for a studio-wide winner because the products, evidence and publishers are not equivalent. Convert every promising name into a role card, then test only the cards that match real work.

If the role is blank, the shortlist is just a shopping list.
